Managing Bushfire Risk with Mapworks

Following the Keelty report into the Perth Hills bushfires in 2011, DFES was charged with creating a management framework to identify and mitigate the risk due to bushfires. A BRMS was listed as one of the top recommendations in the Keelty report and is one of DFES’ top priorities.

In 2014, Amristar was engaged to develop the web-based solution that would enable a range of stakeholders to collaborate and manage the risk to assets associated with bushfires. Stakeholders include Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and all Western Australian local governments.

DFES then requested for a major technological refresh of the application in 2020, including enhanced workflows, tighter integration with the Mapworks mapping component and a modern, responsive user experience that is compatible with both desktop and tablet devices.

The final application includes:

  • Custom workflows for the identification of assets and treatments
  • Calculation of Bushfire risk to assets and the impact of the suggested treatments
  • Full spatial integration with Amristar’s Mapworks product which allows for custom data creation and visualisation against authoritative data
  • Enables analysis of risk factors associated with nearby vegetation and ground-based factors such as slope angles
  • Security restrictions based on Local Government and Single Sign On authentication
  • Combination of standard reports and integration with PowerBI
  • Batch imports of assets and treatments based upon uploaded SHP files
  • PDF generation with markup / annotation capability
  • Upload of geo-tagged photos and other contextual spatial data
  • Deployment to Amazon Web Services to allow for optimal scalability and cost savings

DFES has described the BRMS as a superior solution compared to those used by similar agencies in other states of Australia. It continues to be enhanced, expanded and integrated into other reporting / data warehousing applications in DFES. In addition, DFES have often praised Amristar for our professionalism, innovation, responsiveness and ongoing support of both the system and the Department as a whole.
